Community Driven Library Gives Back
Partner Highlight: Lanier Library
The idea for the Gardening for Life Project began with a few friends having a lively conversation. That is just how our community’s member-driven library began back in 1890. As the story goes, “In the winter of 1889, five Tryon, North Carolina ladies met over tea and discussed the community’s need for a library. After receiving encouraging support, a club was formed to develop and support a library. The founders envisioned an organization that would be the source of intellectual and cultural stimulation for the community.”
Fast forward to 2023 and The Lanier Library is the oldest institution in Polk County, NC and one of only sixteen membership libraries in the entire United States. That reflects the dedication of the Board , staff, volunteers and the entire community.
Beyond the robust catalog of titles the Lanier offers, you can also learn by way of book clubs, the annual poetry contest and mystery festival and by attending regular talks. In fact, thanks to COVID, many of the presentations are available as recording here - https://thelanierlibrary.org/virtual-programs/
You don’t have to look far to see the library’s reach and impact beyond its doors and out into the community. Our project is just one of many community endeavors this organization has supported. The GFLP is incredibly grateful to have the Lanier Library as a lead Partner for this community initiative.
Jenny Purtill, Executive Director, shares … “Founded in 1890, the Lanier Library has deep roots in Polk County, and we are committed to preserving its natural beauty. Our Felburn Nature Library contains many volumes on Western North Carolina and its native flora, fauna, and animals. We are thrilled to be a partner with the Gardening For Life Project and look forward to seeing ways this community can improve in taking care of our plants and the Earth. Come visit the Felburn Nature Library at Lanier Library to learn more about the area’s natural wonders.”
